Dear Family, Friends and Fans,

Mommy has been really busy lately and keeps talking about how behind she is on the blog. So, I figured I better help out. We have lots to tell you!

For starters, Mommy went back to work at a nice place. Every day she gets dressed in clothes I can't wipe my hands on. I get to stay home with my super fun new friend named Liz. We all think she's wonderful and like her a lot!

Liz is a really great teacher. She taught me how to say my ABCs. I can count to ten (in Spanish, too!) and I learned my colors and shapes. For some reason everyone laughs when I say octagon and trapezoid. I also love to sing. Liz is a really good singer and loves music as much as me! The other day I was singing Frere Jacques. Again, lots of laughter. Parents are odd but fun, I guess.

I have also learned about peeing on the potty. Mommy bought me my own seat. I love to yell "pee potty!" especially when I don't want to do whatever it is Mommy, Daddy or Liz are asking me to do. I've tried to poop in the potty. Everyone gets really excited when I say I am going to poop on the potty. I really like that and hope it still happens when I grow up.

I've taken up cooking. Mommy lets me stand on a chair in the kitchen and cook stuff in a big bowl. Yesterday I cooked pasta. I was supposed to only cook pasta but I saw a nice blue box with a girl with an umbrella on it. I poured the whole box in the bowl with the pasta. I threw some on the floor and laughed when Angel licked it up. Mommy came out of the bathroom but she wasn't laughing. I think she was mad because I didn't cheer her on when she was trying to poop.

I'm in a big girl bed now! I climbed out of my crib one night. It was so easy! Then Daddy spent a long time lowering it but I climbed out again. Next thing I knew my crib turned into a big girl bed. I didn't like it at first so I slept on the floor for a week. I cried a lot. So did Mommy but I don't think it was for the same reason. Once I tried sleeping in my big girl bed I noticed it felt a lot like my same old crib. Now I love it and can't wait to go to bed every night!

Mommy went on a trip with Auntie Reeree last week. While she was gone I tried peanut butter with Liz. I had it a few times with Mommy, too and it was delicious! Liz and I went to the park and then big, red, hot, itchy bumps appeared all over me. Liz called Mommy. After Liz told Mommy over and over again that I was still breathing we went home. I don't think they are going to give me delicious peanut butter any more.

Well, my crayon is down to a stub. I am sure Mommy will post pictures of my birthday soon!

Summer Better Than Others

We had our annual "heat wave" last week! Not as bad as last year, though. There was a wonderful breeze that made a few days in the 90s quite bearable.

A couple of weeks ago we headed out to Whidbey Island for our annual vacation with Aunt Sheree and Uncle Al! One evening in particular yielded a few photos that captured the spirit of our time together.

Cece was thrilled to be in command of dessert which she lovingly fed to Uncle Al and Daddy.

After a few bites of her own, Cece turned into the life of the party.

This may be my most favorite picture of the year.

Uncle Al says, "You're pretty special, kid".

We couldn't agree more.

A few weeks ago a lovely girl at Trader Joe's gave Cece a balloon which lasted for days. She figured out how to eat, drink and play without ever letting it go. We were a little concerned that this was going to be the first object of her attachment knowing it would ultimately be a temporary affair. After about a week, Cece lost interest and one day without her knowing it finally popped. Better to have loved and lost than never loved at all, wouldn't you agree?

A Bumpy Ride

At last! A posting about our trip to Boston. Wait a minute .... where are all the pictures? No photos of Cece with her grandparents or from the barbecue at Amy's house with the old Starbucks gang? Did the camera break? Well, yes but unfortunately it's a little worse than that.

On the second day of the trip Cece came down with a nasty stomach virus. We wound up in the emergency room. Twice. To make matters worse, Mommy got it, then Daddy, then Auntie Sheree, then Uncle Al, then Christina and Sheree's sister. While most of us fought it off in 24 hours, Cece had it the entire trip. After 10 days of what Daddy describes as "throwing and going" Cece finally had solid food and milk again once we got back home.

We were able to see a few friends but not all our loved ones. Mommy and Daddy took turns staying in with Cece to try and stay on track with visiting. But everyone really wanted to see Cece who was terribly contagious. Aside from all the disappointment, we were so proud of our little girl. She proved that she is one tough cookie and can keep smiling in the face of adversity.

The true heroes of this story were Auntie Sheree and Uncle Al. Imagine having sick guests in your home for a week and a half. Oh, and hosting a graduation party of 200 people and trying to keep your son healthy who is in the middle of a state baseball championship series. Then, getting sick on top of it all! They never once let us feel anything but loved and welcomed. Thanks you guys. We love you very much.

And to all the faithful followers of the Cece’s blog – thank you! Often when we have delays between postings we find out about folks who read the blog that we didn’t know about. We love to hear about all Cece's fans! We promise to keep up the best we can.

Okay, Cece. Fasten that seatbelt because we have a fun summer ahead and before you know it ... you will be 2! Flight attendant! We need little bottles of mommy juice over here please!

Ever notice how often toddlers get safety strapped into things? In the car - click! At the table - click! In the jogger - click! The more gear you have the more variety of strapping options. I am starting to see this is is less for the child's safety and more for the parent's sanity.

Regardless, Sunday morning we strapped Cece in to the bike trailer Daddy got me for my birthday last year. We pedaled a few miles and in strong winds while the princess giggled and chirped from the safety of her chariot. My face hurt from windburn and Cece's must have hurt from smiling. A great day!

Hey you two! Get back to pedaling!

25 pounds of cute in the trailer might be hard on the knees, but it is easy on the eyes.

Woof Woof Night Night

Our wonderfully sweet dog, Boomer had to leave us this weekend. As one friend said, he lived a great life and had Honey to thank for becoming part of our family. Boomer was a stray and wound up at the pound with Honey after she jumped out of my car window when I lived in Los Angeles. Let's just say I went to pick up one dog and left with two. That was 13 years ago and what a long, great trip it has been.

When Cece arrived, Boomer wasn't really sure what was happening. The night we came home from the hospital is one we'll never forget. I was in pain from the surgery, the heat was broken and Boomer was desperately whining and pacing around the house. It wasn't pretty. But in the next few weeks we all settled in to our roles and Boomer became Cece's ardent protector.

He was patient and loving even in his last months when she would crawl on him, pull his tail and pester him while he tried to sleep. I would say, "Cece, Boomer night-night" and she would wave her night-night wave and let him be. I think she has noticed he is gone. She looks around every now and then and says "Woof woof?". To which I reply, " Woof Woof night night". She gives me a little look as if to say, " Oh."

Although Cece won't remember Mommy's dogs, she'll know the story of how they kept Mommy company until Daddy came along then they kept Mommy and Daddy company until Cece came along. And, after Cece came along? Well, we're still writing that story.

Cece's First Seder

Uncles Alan and Rob asked us to join their Passover Seder again this year - Cece's first! Traditions mean a lot to us and we love being included as family. Above, Cece and Spencer become best buddies. He even let her chew on his toys. Mmmmm!

Uncle Alan cooks up quite the feast and guides us through the haggadah which is the telling of the story. Cece especially loves the charoses which, my fellow gentiles is pronounced HA-ro-sis and is made with apples, cinnamon, nuts and wine. She even tried the gefilte fish along with more than her share of matzoh.

Their friends Doug and Karen were also at Passover two years ago when we announced we were expecting. They were thrilled to meet Cece. Mommy was thrilled that this time she could have plenty of Manischewitz!

Many thanks to Uncle Rob and Uncle Alan for a very special evening. We love you!

March Gladness

A long winter of hard work and discipline pays off. It's time for the final four ... day weekend of March! Auntie Leslee joined us on our home court and schooled us in toddler zone coverage.

The toddler stage is not without it's challenges but has an awful lot of cuteness to make up for it. Every day or so Cece latches on to a random object or two to play with. A wine cork, a curler Kathi gave her or this week's favorite - a rock. This morning Cece came around the corner with her precious rock and a fluffy swag of toilet paper. If it makes her happy ... right?

We are so lucky! Aunt Sheree was in town for back to back meetings and we got to spend two whole weekends together! We hardly sat still the whole visit. We played, walked, ate, shopped and stayed up late every night. Cece learned a few new things from Aunt Sheree including how to say "I don't know!" complete with grand hand gesturing as you can see above. Cece is still recovering from all the fun ... as is Mommy!

Aunt Sheree made sure to wind Cece up every night right before bed. Good times!

Who can focus on books at bedtime with such a special visitor in town?!

Oh, well. We'll sleep some other time.

Spring Has Sprung

My Dad was a funny man. So many of our friends and family can instantly recall one of his jokes, quick comebacks or stories. He had one poem he used to recite to us kids every Spring. At the first and most perfect opportunity, Dad would stand up straight and strike a pose like he was in front of an esteemed group of colleagues and say:

Spring has sprung.

The grass is riz.

I wonder where

the flowers is?

After the first few years of laughing, we would groan. As we grew older, we'd moan and roll our eyes while hiding a grin or giggle so as not to encourage him. I smile broadly when I think about it now knowing that poor Cece is in for the same with her Daddy. So, off to the park we go to enjoy the amazing blue skies, the cries of the fledgling eagles and a run in the new grass to find out just where ... the flowers is.

Cece has become quite the little monkey lately. After honing her climbing skills on the furniture, she took the the playground equipment today with no fear. She climbed up and down the stairs, over the little bridge and down the slide. I think riding in the stroller around the park is officially a thing of the past. Joy to the Whirled

If there was even a shred of denial left about Cece still being a little baby it went down the drain after bath time yesterday. I picked Cece up out of the tub, put her on the floor, wrapped her in a towel and she ran away. She ran away! I felt dizzy for a minute. But I am getting used to that feeling with picking up toys three times a day, darting towards her when she goes headfirst into the table corners, and having momentary panic attacks when she's out of sight and silent for 30 seconds. I know these stages will be gone in a whirlwind and I wouldn't trade this time for anything ...except maybe that toy sucker thing the Grinch has.

Christmas Treedition

One of the best parts of having a family is creating and honoring traditions. Just like last year when Cece was all of 6 weeks old, we headed over to Vashon Island for our Christmas tree.

The Icing on the Cake

First birthday celebrations are pretty special and this one was no exception. Cece enjoyed all the fun and festivities. But most of all, having out of town family visiting and being joined by our neighbors was truly the icing on the cake. How sweet it was!

Looks Like We Made It

Today we are celebrating our 100th post and counting the days until Cece's 1st birthday. What better time to pat ourselves on the back? After all, we are very proud that we made it ... rather her! I know the miracle of life is not a new concept but we still can't believe we made a baby. Our darling collaboration is clearly equal parts Mommy and Daddy. But, who does Cece most resemble? Two's Company

What's better than having a visitor? Having TWO visitors!

Last weekend was pretty special. First, we enjoyed the company of Auntie Sheree who was in town for a meeting. Although our visit was short, Auntie Sheree packed a ton of love into every moment.

Cece helps Auntie Sheree with her e-mail and English Muffin.

But wait! There's more!

We also got to see Uncle Christopher, one of Daddy's best buds who was in town to visit us and his Aunt who lives here, too. After back to back rounds of golf with Daddy, Uncle Christopher miraculously had enough energy left to squeeze Cece and flash us his million dollar smile before taking off again.

Thanks for coming, Aunt Sheree and Uncle Chris. We love you!

The Boys of Bummer

Our baseball season came to a close on Sunday as we watched our boys get swept in the playoffs. Daddy is teaching Cece that being a fan means win or lose we stand by our team. a. First thing in the morning.

b. About every 20 minutes.

c. When I try to get her to say "mama".

d. All of the frickin' above.

You guessed it. All day long Cece sings "Dada! Dada! Dada!". When Daddy comes home? She practically convulses with joy. Sure, I get a little taste of that myself once in a while and it is the most whole-body-melting experience ever. But I have to say nothing lights Cece up like her Daddy.

A Welcome Angel

Who's that on our couch?

That's Angel, Auntie Lisa's dear West Highland Terrier. She's 16 pounds of sweet, sassy love and the newest member of our family. Angel made the trip back from PA with us and didn't seem to mind her cramped quarters in a carry-on at our feet. Once home, adjusting to one another came easily. She's a perfectly sized playmate for Cece. Even Boomer has accepted Angel although he misses his Honey greatly ... just like Angel misses Auntie Lisa. There are places in our hearts that can never be filled again after a loss. Yet somehow there always seems to be room for someone new.

A Hero Among Heroes

A trip to Pennsylvania would not have been complete without visiting Fort Indiantown Gap. This town with a long name is home to a beautiful national cemetery which is my father's final resting place. Cece was among many great heroes that day including her grandfather. Many thanks to Uncle Kenn for hosting our visit and ensuring such a fitting, final honor for Dad.

Honey, our beloved Golden Retriever fell ill last week and could not be saved. She was such an important part of our family and will be greatly missed.

With our few remaining days in PA we made our way out to Carlisle to see my BFF Teri's boys Jake and Ben. We all had a blast and Cece loved them so much! Although our dinner and visit went by quickly, the boys made sure we filled up on much needed love and laughter.

We said goodbye to Auntie Lisa yesterday as she wished with a beautiful, private remembrance.

While the events of the past week have been indescribably sad and difficult, Cece has provided everyone with constant joy. In Lisa's waning hours the sound of Cece's voice and laughter brought on a final, peaceful smile.

Our love and gratitude to all our friends and family who have provided love and support.

As many of you may know, Aunt Lisa (Mommy's sister) has been fighting cancer for a few months. Recently, Aunt Lisa's condition has worsened and she is unable to continue treatment until further notice. Mommy, Daddy and Cece are flying back to Pennsylvania next week to be with Aunt Lisa and Uncle Kenn. We will try to post updates. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. Love to all.

We woke up early this morning to say goodbye to our dear friends, Al and Sheree with whom we have shared a wonderful 10 day visit. While the grownups ate, drank and laughed with reckless abandon Cece was busy tackling a few more milestones.

As previously posted she is now pulling herself up to a stand and crawling around with complete confidence. As if that is not enough, purees are already a thing of the past as Cece has discovered finger foods. While Mommy has been trying to take things slowly, Aunt Sheree and Uncle Al encouraged (to say the very least) Cece's progress towards toddlerhood. Me? I just watched and cried a few times.

Friday afternoon we packed up the truck and headed out to Scenic Beach State Park. In all the preparations for Cece's first tent camping, one thing I did not have to do is worry. Cece is always up for an adventure. She adjusts beautifully anywhere we go and a weekend in the woods was no exception.

She had a ball looking up at the tall trees, listening to the birds and the cheeky chipmunks. She loved the long walks with Daddy in her backpack carrier putting her high above all the action. And in true Aspin camping style, we ate and slept and snuggled like bears.

No matter where we go or what we do, we can always count on Cece to be a very happy camper.

Today was a scorcher and a perfect day to take a dip!

We headed down to Colman Pool in Lincoln Park and took Cece swimming for the very first time. She was a little overwhelmed and didn't take to the splashes in her face, but all in all it was a wonderful afternoon. We can't wait to go back!

We like to call that CCTV, a video baby monitor Matt gave me for Christmas. It has a crib mounted camera with night vision (super creepy when little eyes are open!). At first I thought it was wonderfully, indulgently and needlessly excessive. As it turns out, I can't imagine sleeping peacefully or worry free without it. We love watching her sleep at night and play in the morning.

A few months ago Daddy had a great idea. "You should get away", he suggested. I thought about it for awhile and then made plans to go see Leslee in San Diego. Cool!

However, today is the big day. I hardly slept because I am excited ... and nervous, too. What's to be nervous about? Daddy is a pro at baby care. Everything will be fine. So what is my problem?

Look at that face! Have you seen that face? I mean, really?! Who could leave that perfect, sweet, angel faced, little, chubby, smiley, giggly, baby girl?! She just started saying "Ma ma"! Am I crazy?!

Okay. Taking a deep breath now. The wisdom of the airline safety speech is coming to mind. Traveling with small children? Put the mask over yourself first. Got it. Time with one of my dearest, soul soothing friends can only do me good. Its just the leaving on a jet plane part that is hard.

My bags aren't quite packed, but thanks to Matt the bills are paid and I do know when I'll be back again. I might hate to go, but I know for sure I will love coming back.

Sunday night we welcomed back Shay, Sophia, Katie and their mommies and daddies for another reunion of the freinds we made at our Lamaze class. Thought you might like to see how all the babies are doing!

Planting Two Lips

Before we drove home from camping on Camano Island, we took a detour. We headed for the Skagit Valley in search of the famed Tulip Festival. While there was no festival to be found we could not believe our eyes when we discovered the endless carpets of color! We wound our way through the gardens where as you can see, I did some planting of my own.

The Time of My Life

We welcomed the month of May with a trip to Camano Island for Cece's first camping adventure! We stayed at Cama Beach State Park which is a very special place; it was new to us yet somehow familiar. The property includes original cabins that were built as part of a fishing camp in the 1930s. The camp was purchased by a private owner and run as a resort in the 1950s. In addition to the small cabins and bigger bungalows, the store, boat houses and family residence have also been restored to reflect how they looked back then. As we walked the grounds it hit us! This place is so Dirty Dancing!

" The summer of 1969 when everybody called me "Baby"... that was the summer we went to Kellermans."

Our cabin ... you know ... where the "dance people" stay.

"You looked wonderful out there."

"Look spaghetti arms, this is my dance space."

"It's not on the one, it's not the mambo, it's a feeling ... a heartbeat."

I remember that night in May. The stars were bright above!

"God, I'm so sick of this rain. Remind me not to take my honeymoon at Niagara Falls!".

"I won't tell your mother about this. Right now, I'm going to bed.

And take that stuff off your face before your mother sees you."

"I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you!"

"Nobody puts baby in a corner!"

And so, that is how we started the summer. Maybe we'll end the season with ... The Pachenga!

Living the Bunny Life

Since the day Cece was born, we have been calling her "Bunny". We think it may have something to do with the little stuffed rabbit Nana Kissi brought us in the hospital. Or, maybe that Cece was a soft, tiny little creature with a perfect pink nose. Either way our little Bunny has been living the life lately .... hopping merrily and nibbling on carrots. If it is true that our name influences our future, than we may want to reconsider a more promising nickname like Carly, Margaret, Theresa, Sandra, or Oprah. On second thought, we'll stick with Bunny. Nothing wrong with being sweet and adorable your whole life.

Milestones are bittersweet and can also taste weird.

The baby swing and bouncer have been retired. Enter the Jumperoo and the high chair. Cereal is still on the menu, but we have also introduced Cece's first foods: bananas and avocado. We mash, we stir and we feel lucky to be able to give her the good stuff. Here Cece is trying avocado mixed with rice cereal and some flaxseed meal for good measure.

I know. It's only guacamole ... but she likes it.

The Baby Blessing

Easter Sunday will now have a greater meaning in our family. Cece's First Easter was also Baby Blessing Day when we celebrated the beginning of her lifelong, spiritual journey.

The concept of the Baby Blessing or Dedication as it is also known came about for families like ours who have religious beliefs but do not affiliate with only one church or faith in particular. Rather, the beliefs of the family are more of a collection of diverse perspectives about God.

Our message to Cece is simple. We want her to recognize and respect all religious beliefs while she learns and grows into her own. Our role is to guide her and remind her that there is great power in the universe and in the shared spiritual bonds of nature and humanity.

In keeping with the tradition of our wedding, we called on our dear friend Paul who performed our ceremony. Paul was planning a visit and was willing to once again lead our family through a very personal and important event.

With our close friends and family spread out around the country, we requested contributions of poems, readings and the like to be read during the blessing. These very special readings reinforced our desire to acknowledge and be grateful for everyone's point of view. The readings included passages from the Bible, a Jewish baby blessing, personal poems, prayers and other very special words of dedication.

We the rain pouring down all day, the intimate gathering took place in our living room. We were joined by Cece's Godmother, my cousin Serena who drove with her daughters from Northern California. Cece's Godfather, Mike joined us via phone from New England. Nana Kissi was here as a special part of our family and gets credit for all the fantastic photos.

There could not have been a more moving and meaningful way to welcome Cecelia into the world and as Paul would say "give her wings to fly"!

Can You Believe It?

Back in July, Matt and I took our last vacation as a couple with no kids. We thought it would be great to take time to reflect and dream about our new life and baby Cecelia. After two days of hiking around San Francisco, we were happy to retire to the wine country for the rest of the week. We were thrilled to find Scrabble in the house we rented. As you know the game starts with the players drawing letters to see who goes first. On this particular night Matt and I drew the same letter. You can imagine our amazement when we saw this on the board. No matter what the official Scrabble Dictionary says, to us that spells miracle.

We've been lucky to have so many houseguests since Cece was born. The guestroom happens to be part of Oliver's domain. Guests have no choice but to bunk with him. No one has seemed to mind; he is a very special boy. Give Ollie one night and he will win your heart forever.

My favorite place to walk with Cecelia is Lincoln Park which gives us a good 2 miles of both wooded and waterfront paths. Here she is all cozied up in the jogger. While the park is impossible to crowd, we rarely get through without being stopped ... usually by the elderly ladies. Cece remains fixed on the sights and sounds around her which leads the ladies to say "She looks so serious!". So I say she is the grumpiest baby ever and never smiles. Ha! No, I don't. I just say she's sleepy and maybe she'll smile next time ... which really is a lot more often than they know.

Earlier this week, Cece was keeping herself entertained when all of a sudden her nose started to crinkle up like it does right before a sneeze. With one eye open, she took a deep breath and out came the sneeze with a perfectly articulated "AH CHOO"! I went for the camera. I didn't think she would make another sneezy face; I only wanted to capture one of the special moments with Cece that makes me laugh ... sometimes until I cry.

Our dear friend, Leslee came for a visit last weekend from San Diego and brought lots of sunshine and smiles. Cece loved her expressions and singing especially Itsy Bitsy Spider which could make Cece stop fussing almost instantly. Not only did Auntie Leslee's visit dry up all the rain, it dried up all the snow we had all weekend, too!

The books, the doc, the blogs, yadayadayada all say to give solids a try in between 4 and 6 months. We had Cece's 4 month check up yesterday. After seeing her great development results we headed to the store to get cereal and a spoon. We had our first "bites" this morning. The cereal went in. The cereal came out. The cereal went in. The cereal came out. There may have even been a swallow here and there. The look on Cece's face may have had more to do with the big black thing that flashes and clicks than the cereal itself. A fine first outing and of course an image never to be forgotten.

Back in September, Matt and I attended a weekend long Lamaze workshop. We had the good fortune of joining 3 terrific couples who just happened to have due dates within days of us.

Left to right are Benjamin & Corrine, Odoulia & Steve, and on our other side are Heather & Chris. We kept in touch and after the babies were born the moms started getting together every Monday. We've included the daddies twice. Last night at our house was one of those occasions. The fellas went out back to do manly things like drink beer and burn stuff in the fire. We all stayed inside and let the babies play, coo, gurgle and chatter.

As we were taking down our holiday decorations, it dawned on me that we never took a picture of Cece in front of the tree! A Storied Life

Keeping the camera handy to capture Cece's special moments has given us a few, sweet shots of life with Honey and Boomer, too. This was Christmas night. Nana Kissi came over for Christmas dinner (another amazing turkey on the grill ala Matt Aspin) and gave Cece "The Polar Express". I picked it up and started reading it to Cece who was lying on the couch to my left. There was a teeny- tiny patch of couch open to my right. Even in his old age, Boomer still manages to get his long, lanky, lumpy frame in the smallest of spots if it means getting close to someone. He snuggled up right next to me and I kept reading ... and that's all she wrote.
